Symbol

This section displays two series of digital art.

Both are based on the juxtaposition of strong/sensual brushstrokes with photographic elements which, as symbols, ask to be deciphered.

Other Sea was born as an artist’s book. Its dimensions are quite large (80 x 50 x 5 cm) and it contains 10 original paintings intertwined with 10 poetic texts. The heavy format, the different feel of the paper, the smell of the natural tinctures or the sound when turning the pages all contribute in making this first version a sensuous object/book.

For the printed version -which is partly shown here- more images and texts have been added. The number of photographic symbols has also been multiplied, thus changing the angle of perception: from the sense of feel to the intuitive realm.

In both versions, images and texts work together to present a journey into the world of the unconscious which is conceived here as a sort of primeval sea from which dreams and also nightmares emerge.

Dreamscapes is a linking of symbolic scenes, conceived as a stroll through a nocturnal gallery full of images with opaque but not altogether alien meaning.

The definition of symbol that Jean Chevalier gives (Dictionary of Symbols, introduction, ed. Penguin) was critical for this series:
"The symbol and its development in the form of myths are another story, another fantasy even, but they have the power to bring us closer to the immutable dark source from which all light and all word emerge."
